Application Maintenance & Support

Keep a live application useful, maintainable, and ready for the next step.

Software needs attention after launch

Bugs, platform changes, new requirements, and growing backlogs can make a live application harder to operate. KBD helps organizations understand the current state of their software, prioritize the work that matters, and carry improvements through to release.

An engagement can begin with a focused issue, a code and platform review, or a plan for ongoing application support. We work with web and mobile systems, including products that need to keep serving users while changes are introduced.

What maintenance and support can include

Issue investigation and bug fixes

Reproduce problems, understand their impact, fix the underlying cause, and test the affected workflow before release.

Application enhancements

Turn a prioritized backlog into manageable changes, from interface improvements to new reporting or administrative features.

Platform and dependency updates

Review version changes and compatibility risks, update components, and test the application against the revised environment.

Performance and infrastructure review

Investigate slow journeys and resource use, and review server configuration or application design where it affects the product.

Security improvements

Review relevant application risks and implement improvements to code, access controls, and supporting workflows.

Release and operational support

Help coordinate updates, document changes, and support the people responsible for operating the application.

Start with a clear support plan

  1. Assess the application

Review the system, the available documentation, known issues, dependencies, and access needed to support it.

  2. Prioritize improvements

Identify the most valuable updates, triage issues, and plan testing and release support.

  3. Improve and review

Deliver updates, verify important user journeys, and revisit the backlog as the product and its requirements change.

Experience with public-facing systems

KBD’s archived Canada’s Food Guide project includes testing, enhancement, maintenance, and support for content teams. Health Product Shortages Canada demonstrates related work across reporting, administration, notifications, accessibility, usability, and security.

Do you support systems built by another team?

We can begin by reviewing the application and its operating environment. The review helps establish what can be supported and what needs attention first. We can help with issue investigation, ongoing improvements, and release support.
